The Ethical Standards of a Gift Planning Officer:
Why following the rules is always the best action

Speakers:

  • David E. Williams, Esq.
Senior Director of Gift Planning, Scripps Health Foundation

  • Kenneth G. Coveney, Esq.
Partner, Dostart Clapp Gordon & Coveney LLP

  • Jamie Nelson
Director of Planned Giving, California State University San Marcos

As featured in the July/August issue of Advancing Philanthropy (AFP's magazine),  David Williams, Ken Coveney and Jamie Nelson will discuss the importance of following the Model Standards of Practice in gift planning.  Through hypothetical scenarios based on real cases, they will illustrate how mistakes in gift planning can be traced back to a failure to abide by one or more of the standards of practice. They will cover everything from the primacy of donor philanthropic intent and full disclosure of all parties' relationships, to the encouragement of donors to consult independent advisers and recipient charities prior to making a gift. And in the end, how adhering to the standards of practice can result in a larger eventual gift.

Workshop
9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

Empowering Nonprofit Organizations with Planned Giving Tools

Speakers: Colleen R. Lukoff, CFRE and Cary Blanchette, CFRE

Colleen R. Lukoff, CFRE, is a consultant to nonprofit organizations, advising and assisting them with their fund development needs. Most of her work involves planning and/or managing major gifts and capital campaigns for small to mid-size health and human service organizations, and educational support groups.

Mr. Cary Blanchette, CFRE, is President of Third Millennium Philanthropy (3MP).  Cary founded 3MP in 2001 to offer important small non-profit organizations an opportunity to begin their own planned giving programs.

This workshop is for individuals new to fundraising who hope to learn more about the basics of planned giving, or for the fundraising professional in a small shop who is looking for the steps to take to be successful in planned giving.  Bring your questions and be ready for some specific ideas to take back to the office and implement!
