AFP San Diego Luncheon Program Trends In Philanthropy: Sharing Results of
the San Diego Study An analysis of the study conducted by the San Diego Grantmakers and the University of San Diego Caster Family Center for Nonprofit Research provides insights into philanthropic support of the San Diego nonprofit sector. Areas examined by the study include the size of local grant making and growth trends in the area; the types of nonprofits that are most likely to be the recipients of foundation and corporate grants; what areas of the county are granted most heavily; the amount of private grants coming in and out of San Diego; and how organized philanthropy in San Diego compares to other regions. Laura Deitrick currently holds the position of Senior Research Associate at the University of San Diego's Caster Family Center for Nonprofit Research. Additionally, she is a doctoral candidate in Leadership Studies at USD. During the past three years, Laura has conducted research and released reports on nonprofit ethics, executive transition, the economics of San Diego's nonprofit sector, nonprofit confidence,and regional grant making. Prior to her position at USD, Laura worked for seven years in development and also served as the Executive Director of the Coronado Schools Foundation. Laura holds a BA in economics from San Diego State University and a Masters in Nonprofit Leadership Management from USD. She is an independent nonprofit organizational consultant specializing in executive transition and board development. She serves on the Board for Christ Episcopal Church. Laura serves as adjunct faculty at the University of San Diego and UC San Diego where she teaches organizational theory and nonprofit management at the graduate level. Her current research focus is on the relationship between nonprofits and public education.
