Volunteer Leadership and Succession Planning
Toni Woodward Nickell

Toni Woodward Nickell, recipient of the 2008 Spirit of Philanthropy Award for Outstanding Organizational Volunteer, will be sharing a few stories and her perspective on volunteering for more than 25 years.  We will discuss how to engage volunteers to train their successors, finding volunteer leaders and barriers to volunteer involvement.

Toni Woodward Nickell is the 2008 recipient of the Spirit of Philanthropy Outstanding Organizational Volunteer Award sponsored by AFPSD’s National Philanthropy Day.  Toni currently serves on six nonprofit boards in support of education, science, health, and animal welfare including the San Diego Chapter of Achievement Rewards for College Scientists Foundation (ARCS®) where as Web Site Director, she has been instrumental in developing the ARCS Web sites which are the cornerstone for the Foundation’s critical electronic and mass communications – both locally and nationally. At The Neurosciences Institute, Toni serves on the board and has been an important committee member for the Institute’s annual fundraiser, the “Minding the Arts” Gala. As an active volunteer at Scripps since 1989, Toni has co-chaired the Scripps President’s Council, increasing its membership to more than 900 volunteers and motivating others to give more than $11 million in annual gifts. She has also helped organize numerous fundraising events for Scripps Health.  Helen Woodward Animal Center benefits from Toni’s leadership through her service on the board and through their ACES (Animal Center Education Services) program that trains other animal welfare organizational leadership. Toni has been involved with the Charity Fair Horse Show for over ten years benefitting Helen Woodward Animal Center and the Don Diego Scholarship Fund.
