Make plans now to attend AFP San Diego Chapter’s annual membership reception being held this year at the beautiful Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice on the USD campus. Join your Board of Directors, fellow members and guests for an evening of networking and fun. You’ll enjoy hosted appetizers, listen to great music, and hear a fantastic presentation by local philanthropist and our special guest speaker, Darlene Marcos Shiley. Mrs. Shiley will provide insights on how development professionals can optimize their relationships with donors, followed by coffee and dessert.

Darlene Marcos Shiley is an honors graduate of the California State University system. Currently President of The Shiley Foundation and fiduciary for all of the Shiley Family Trusts, she takes the field of education very seriously. She and her husband, Donald, a pioneer in the medical device field, have made significant leadership gifts to the University of San Diego, UCSD, San Diego State, and the University of Portland. Darlene is the current Chair of the Board of USD, only the second woman to hold that position. She also serves on the Salk Institute Board, the National Alzheimer's Association Board, the Shiley Eye Center Advisory Board and Scripps Clinic Advisory Boards.

With a background in Theatre Arts at San Jose State University, Mrs. Shiley performed in numerous plays, musicals and vocal groups in the years preceding her marriage and now is committed to supporting institutions that train and feature talented individuals. The Old Globe, KPBS, San Diego Rep and other theatres have benefited from her generosity. As an ardent arts patron, Mrs. Shiley served on the City of San Diego's founding Commission for Arts and Culture, The Board of the Old Globe, New York-based National Corporate Theatre Fund, and the KPBS Community Advisory Board. The Shiley Theatre at USD honors their endowment of the MFA program there. She co-chaired the Host Committee for the nationally televised Presidential Debate held at the theatre in 1996.

Mrs. Shiley's numerous honors include the 1992 San Diego Press Club Community Activist Headliners of the Year, the 1992 UCSD Distinguished Service Medal, KPBS' first Woman of the Year award, Volunteer of the Year award from the National Society of Fund Raising Executives (now AFP), and Girl Scouts' Coolest Woman of the Year. Darlene and Donald were named AFP Philanthropists of the Year, have received the Glenner Alzheimer Centers' Spirit of Discovery and Caring Award and a Human Unity Award. They have been acknowledged as San Diego Magazine's Philanthropists of the Year, received USD's Presidential Honors in 2000 and been given the UCSD Chancellors Medal for Community Services.
