AFP San Diego Corporate citizenship in the 21st century is under transformation. Strong philanthropic and volunteer activities are no longer enough for most businesses. The current global challenges of transparency, stakeholder expectations, accountability, trust and reputation require a strategic approach endorsed at the highest levels of the company and integrated and aligned throughout the business operation. Learn from one of San Diego’s Fortune 500 companies how they embrace Corporate Citizenship and how you can leverage your organization to be a part of the picture. Kelly Prasser, Sempra Energy's regional manager of Corporate & Community Relations, will share how her company embraces its responsibility as a model corporate citizen and how other businesses in San Diego are following their lead. Ms. Prasser will then lead a discussion with representatives of San Diego’s most prominent corporate citizens: Cox Communications, CYMER Inc., Invitrogen and the San Diego Padres.
AFP San Diego Kelly Prasser is manager of Corporate Community Relations and Events at Sempra Energy -- a Fortune 500 energy services company headquartered in San Diego with operations throughout the United States, Europe, Canada, Mexico and South America. In her role at Sempra, Kelly develops and manages corporate partnerships in a variety of areas including environmental, business/chambers and economic development groups, leadership development and civic & community organizations. In addition, she oversees corporate memberships and serves on the National Board of Directors for Sempra Energy’s employee giving program Energy For Others. Kelly also serves as liaison to the Sempra Energy Global Enterprises companies and works with several of its subsidiaries to establish community partnership and implement public affairs plans in support of new infrastructure projects throughout the United States. A graduate of the University of California at San Diego, Kelly is active in her local community. Most recently, Kelly was appointed to the board of the San Diego Grantmakers, as well as participates in committees for Leadership California, LEAD, San Diego; Children’s Hospital and the San Diego Women’s Foundation. Kelly has a strong background in marketing, promotions and events planning. Prior to joining Sempra Energy, Kelly worked at the CBS affiliate in San Diego (KFMB AM/FM/TV) as promotion & marketing director for both its radio and television stations. Previous to that, she worked for Franklin & Associates Advertising and Public Relations as an account executive, where she managed local and regional campaigns for McDonald’s, Frito-Lay, Petco and the San Diego Union-Tribune. She also worked in management for Sears. Kelly lives in Rancho San Diego with her husband and two sons Kennedy and Christian. In her role as “mommy,” she volunteers in the classroom, serves on P.T.A. fundraising committees and proudly packs homemade lunches for her boys every day. Amy Berry manages community relations efforts for Cox Communications. She is responsible for overseeing corporate giving, organizing employee volunteer efforts and directing the Cox Kids Foundation - Cox’s philanthropic arm – and its advisory board of employees. She has several years experience working with nonprofit organizations, focusing mostly on communications and marketing. Previously, she worked at The Salvation Army Kroc Center and San Diego Center for Children. Amy received a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with an emphasis in Public Relations from San Diego State University and a Masters in Nonprofit Leadership and Management from the University of San Diego. She serves as the Secretary of the San Diego Women Film Foundation’s Board of Trustees, a member of the Family Health Centers Advisory Board and a member of the ARTS, A Reason To Survive Development Committee. Sue Botos is the Director of The Padres Foundation for Children – the charitable arm of the San Diego Padres Baseball Club. Since joining the Padres in 1999, Botos has played an important role in helping to position the Padres, and their players, as active participants in the community – both through financial donations and in-kind support. She oversees the Padres Foundation’s scholarship program; its health and fitness initiative; and the Foundation and Club’s refurbishment of youth baseball and softball fields throughout the region. She also facilitates the Padres charitable giving efforts ensuring that organizations within San Diego County receive appropriate support and recognition of their fundraising efforts. Botos is a 1991 graduate of The Ohio State University with a degree in journalism and an emphasis in public relations. Lisa C. Peterson has served as Community Relations Manager at Invitrogen Corporation since 2005. In her tenure at Invitrogen, the company has significantly expanded their community relations program to include a robust corporate giving program as well as global initiatives in science education and volunteerism. Prior to joining Invitrogen, Peterson worked in the nonprofit sector as a fundraiser and leadership development consultant. Most recently, Peterson served as a development officer at the Scripps Health Foundation, where she was charged with establishing the Corporation Relations program and managing a portfolio of over forty corporate donors. Peterson graduated from the University of San Diego with a Bachelors of Business Administration Mechel Sylvia is the Senior Manager, Compensation and Benefits at CYMER, Inc., a semiconductor company in San Diego. Due to her passion for volunteerism, in addition to her human resources responsibilities, Mechel helps coordinate CYMER’s community relations activities along with CYMER’s marketing communication department. Mechel has worked at CYMER for over five years and has been instrumental in the growth of CYMER’s community relations activities. Mechel leads CYMER’s partnership with the American Cancer Society. She has spearheaded their Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Team for the past five years, of which CYMER is a major sponsor. Mechel helps the Marketing Department with AIDS Walk San Diego, San Diego Zoo Celebration of the Critters and CYMER E-Cycle recycling event, to name a few. Mechel is a graduate of San Jose State University with a degree in business and communications. |
