Morning Workshop
“…But I Can’t Ask for Money!”
Transforming Reluctant Volunteers into Effective Askers
Many nonprofit organizations have dedicated board
members and volunteers who are willing to do anything to help –
except ask for donations! Learn how to help volunteers become more
comfortable with fundraising by seeing “the ask” from the
perspective of the donors. Janie Anderson will share valuable
techniques for training board members and volunteers to make
personal solicitations.

Lunch Panel Discussion
The Buck Starts Here: Real Life Lessons in
the Art of Asking
Board members and volunteers who willingly and
effectively ask for money can make a tremendous difference to the
fundraising efforts of their organizations. Panelists will share
their experiences in personally asking for gifts of $1,000 to $1
million for a broad range of San Diego organizations.

Speaker Bios
Janie Anderson, CFRE, is a
fundraising consultant who specializes in enhancing the fundraising
effectiveness for both large and small nonprofit clients, across a
broad range of education, health, library, human services and youth
services organizations. Janie is a faculty member of Nonprofit
Management Solutions Training Institute and has taught communication
skills at UCSD Extended Studies. Named by AFP San Diego as
Outstanding Development Professional for 2004, she has been a
presenter at the International Conferences for AFP and the
Association for Healthcare Philanthropy.
Alicia Foster is a founding
member of The San Diego Women's Foundation (SDWF). In seven
years, SDWF has grown to 250 members, granted $1.3 million into the
community and built an endowment of $1.6 million. She served as
membership chair and is currently president of SDWF.
Previously her volunteer activities were related to her children's
activities. She recruited support from friends and colleagues, who
she felt would connect with the missions of the organizations.
Kari Perry is a founding board
member of Pacific Ridge School, a new independent 7 – 12th grade
school opening this fall in Carlsbad. She is serving as Chair of
Development during a successful campaign to raise more than
$6 million. Since leaving the corporate marketing and sales
world in 1997, she has been an active member of Children’s Hospital
Auxiliary (including a term as Underwriting Chair for the Rancho
Santa Fe unit) and has volunteered for other nonprofits in the areas
of health, education and children.
Maggie Watkins began her
fundraising career as a volunteer. She has served as Chair of The
Peninsula YMCA, Women in Business – San Diego Chapter, Republican
Businesswomen and The East County Performing Arts Center, and she
currently is a member of the boards of Project Concern
International, Friends of Vista Hill Foundation, Patrons of the
Prado, BRAVO and Alzheimer’s Association, for which she is chairing
the 2007 gala. A seasoned professional services executive with
legal, accounting and insurance firms, Maggie joined National
University in 2005 as Vice President of Advancement and Alumni
Relations.
