AFP San Diego AFPSD How to be a Philanthropist Join us for an insightful look at philanthropy – through the eyes of a philanthropist. Malin Burnham’s dedication, leadership and service to numerous organizations for close to half a century, as a business leader, a civic leader, a volunteer and a philanthropist, has left an indelible mark in the lives of many in the San Diego region. Malin started actively participating in community causes in the 1950’s when he served as co-chairman of the $4.5 million Tri-Hospital Building Fund, which raised money for Mercy, Sharp and Scripps Hospitals. During the 1960’s and 70’s, he was vice chair of United Way campaigns and worked on special task forces, while at the same time serving on the board of the San Diego Chamber of Commerce. Malin was also one of the founding members of the Board of Governors of the San Diego Community Foundation (now the San Diego Foundation). Further, Malin was the principal instigator in building the Mission Valley YMCA, and headed the Capital Development program of the Metropolitan Board of the YMCA of San Diego County. In 1996, Malin’s $5 million gift to the La Jolla Cancer Research Institute, which inspired an anonymous matching contribution, led to the renaming of the institute to The Burnham Institute, in honor of the Burnham family. He continues to serve tirelessly as a trustee of the institute’s board. Some of the many honors and awards Mr. Burnham has received include: Rotary’s Mr. San Diego; the Gold Spike Award, Stanford University; Civic Entrepreneur of the Year, Economic Development Corp.; Junior Achievement/San Diego Business Hall of Fame; and Philanthropist of the Year, Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP). A native San Diegan, a world champion Star Class sailor and a Stanford graduate, Malin Burnham is the personification of generosity in all its forms – giving the gift of time, spirit and talent. |
